Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center–Plymouth
In 1910, Drs. Borton and Aspinall built a three-story facility at 310 N. Michigan in Plymouth, Ind. The first two floors served as a facility for the treatment of substance abuse and the third story served as a general hospital. In 1914 Dr. Aspinall moved the facility to a six-acre tract across from Centennial Park, which would become the site of Plymouth’s hospital.
In 1921 a concerned group of citizens formed the Marshall County Hospital Association. In 1926 the association purchased the small hospital building and they expanded the facility in 1931. At that time it was renamed Parkview. During the 1930s, the hospital experienced some financial burdens, and in 1941 the hospital was donated to the Marshall County Board of Commissioners, who renamed the facility the Marshall County Parkview Hospital. Expansions to the original hospital were completed in 1959, 1970 and 1976.
In 1982 the Parkview Hospital faced many challenges that threatened its future. The community and physicians investigated several options. After careful study and lengthy negotiations, the board decided to affiliate with Holy Cross Health System. On March 23, 1984, an affiliation ceremony was held, establishing Parkview Hospital as a subsidiary of Saint Joseph’s Care Group, Inc., a newly formed parent company which also included Saint Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in South Bend. The Care Group assumed operations of Parkview on April 1, 1984, and the hospital assumed a new name: Holy Cross Parkview Hospital. After studying the long-term needs of the hospital and evaluating the structure, plans were carried out to replace the facility with a new hospital located southwest of downtown Plymouth.
This state-of-the-art hospital, completed in 1986, has now expanded its campus to include physician offices and a newly opened Cancer Institute. Through the addition and renovation, 12 private rooms have been added to the medical surgical unit for a new total of 30 inpatient beds, and new surgical suites are under construction. Through the effort of Saint Joseph’s Care Group, now called Saint Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, Inc., the hospital in Plymouth has become the pride of the community.
