Established in 1989, the Symposium for Cardiovascular Medical Education is the longest and most prestigious cardiovascular medical education event in the region. Committed to excellence in patient care, the Symposium brings experts from the field of cardiothoracic medicine to educate area physicians and health care professionals on the latest in medical research.
The symposium is named in memoriam for William E. Van Fleit — a prominent, nationally-known South Bend Cardiovascular surgeon, author and teacher. It also honors the late Frances “Fran” M. Van Fleit, a valued member of the SJRMC Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors for The Foundation of SJRMC. Through the generosity of Mrs. Van Fleit’s estate, the William E. Van Fleit, MD, Symposium for Cardiovascular Medical Education will continue to be an educational treasure for many years to come.
“Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center has been honored for 26 years to be the recipient of such noteworthy generosity from the Van Fleit family,” said Ann Rathburn-Lacopo, Chief Development Officer of Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. “We know of no other cardiothoracic symposium in the region that attracts as many prestigious physicians and educators, or brings in such a wide array of internationally-known physician presenters.”
