SJRMC Named One of the Nation's 15 Top Health Systems
by Truven Health Analytics
Mishawaka, Ind. (April 21, 2014) — Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) has been named one of the nation's 15 Top Health Systems by Truven Health Analytics, a leading provider of information and solutions that improve the cost and quality of healthcare. SJRMC was also recognized as one of the nation's 5 Top Small Health Systems (systems with less than $750 Million in operating expenses).
According to Truven Health Analytics' analysis of more than 300 health systems, the 15 Top Health Systems, in matchups with their peers, are ahead of the pack in all study comparisons: they have better survival rates, fewer patient complications, better long-term outcomes, better adherence to accepted care protocols and patient-safety standards, shorter hospital stays and higher patient-satisfaction scores.
"Being recognized as one of the nation's 15 Top Health Systems is a testament to the talented professionals we have and their dedication to a culture of quality and safety," said Albert Gutierrez, president and CEO, Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. "We commit deep resources in state-of-the-art technologies in order to set the standard of care in all communities we serve. We do this, not to win awards, but because better care is our calling."
In 2012, SJRMC was also recognized by Truven Health Analytics as a Top 15 Health System and a Top 5 Small Health System. The complete list of this year's winners can be seen here.
U.S. health systems with two or more short-term, general, non-federal hospitals; cardiac and orthopedic hospitals; and critical access hospitals were assessed in the study. Researchers looked at eight metrics that gauge clinical quality and efficiency: mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average length of stay, 30-day mortality rate, 30-day readmission rate, adherence to clinical standards of care (evidence-based core measures published by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services), and HCAHPS patient survey score (part of a national initiative sponsored by the United States Department of Health and Human Services to measure the quality of care in hospitals). The study relied on public data from the 2011 and 2012 Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data and the CMS Hospital Compare data sets.
"This year's health system winners are setting the national standard for higher quality, efficiency and patient perception of care, which together mean higher value for each community served,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance improvement and 100 Top Hospitals programs at Truven Health Analytics. "These systems have strong leadership and clinical excellence. And they are, or stand to become, outstanding partners with employers and other stakeholders in setting goals for improving community health."
