Diabetes Support Group to Meet September 19 at SJRMC’s Mishawaka Campus
Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) will host a Diabetes Support Group on Wednesday, Sept. 19 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at its Mishawka campus. The Diabetes Support Group meets on the third Wednesday of each month, and invites diabetics, families, friends, and those interested in learning more about diabetes to attend.
“Diabetes can sometimes seem to be an overwhelming disease because it impacts so many areas of an individual’s life,” said Allyson Huisman, RN, BSN, and Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center Diabetic Educator. “As the numbers of diabetics continue to increase in the Michiana region, Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center is committed to providing those with diabetes the knowledge and confidence they need to manage their disease on a day-to-day basis.”
Support groups unite people who live with diabetes, and their family members, in a sense of community by providing them with up-to-date information, educational resources and emotional support. Together, attendees provide valuable insight by sharing personal experiences, feedback on what works/doesn’t work, and first-hand tips to help achieve active health goals.
“Attending a meeting is a great way to compliment what you learn from your healthcare team,” said Huisman. “Through positive reinforcement, participants can show to each other that there is hope—and that diabetes does not have to affect their quality of life.”
Those interested in learning more about SJRMC’s Diabetes Support Group should contact the Saint Joseph Diabetes Resource Center at 574-335-2372. Meetings are held at the hospital, free of charge, and those wishing to attend are asked to be in the hospital’s main lobby by 5:00 p.m. They will then be escorted to the designated meeting room.
