SJRMC Surgeons Perform the First Thoracic Surgical Procedure in Michiana with the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System 12/12/2012
Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) is pleased to announce that physicians Truc Ly, MD, and Michael Savitt, MD, MSE, of Saint Joseph Cardiothoracic Surgery, are the first surgeons in the greater Michiana region to utilize the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System for a thoracic (chest) procedure.
Completed on December 10, 2012, the da Vinci System was used to perform a pulmonary wedge resection, or a surgical procedure in which tissue from the lung was removed from patient with fibrotic pulmonary disease.
“The da Vinci System dramatically enhances visualization of the operative site and more precisely mimics the complex movements of the hand and wrist,” said Truc Ly, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. “For a patient experiencing lung failure, it is imperative to utilize a less-invasive treatment option, and the robot allowed us to delicately access the chest cavity—providing less stress on the body both during and after the procedure.”
Through traditional measures, gaining access to tissue found within in the lung usually involves a six to ten-inch incision. The technique can be quite painful post-operatively because it entails cutting through muscles and spreading the ribs. In comparison, utilizing the minimally invasive da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System enables a surgeon to operate through a few small incisions, without spreading the ribs. As a result, patients undergoing the advanced robotic procedure generally have a shorter hospital stay, experience less pain, blood loss and scarring, and most often recover faster.
“Monday’s surgery was a crucial first for the Michiana region,” said Michael Savitt, MD, MSE, head of cardiothoracic surgery at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. “SJRMC physicians are at the forefront of surgical technologies and techniques. Robotic technology through the da Vinci brings thoracic surgery and care at Saint Joseph to a whole new level, opening this treatment option up to a much broader group of patients across greater Michiana.”
Currently the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System is used by physicians at SJRMC’s Mishawaka campus for a wide range of minimally invasive procedures in specialties including: gynecologic oncology, obstetrics and gynecology, colon and rectal surgery, otolaryngology, urology, and general or vascular surgery. Drs. Ly and Savitt now join a select group of surgeons, from across the country, which use robotics to perform sophisticated thoracic operations.
