Sister Maura Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award
Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) is proud to announce that Sister Maura Brannick, CSC, founder of the Sister Maura Brannick, CSC, Health Center in South Bend, is a recipient of the 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Catholic Health Association (CHA).
CHA's Lifetime Achievement Award annually recognizes an individual who has devoted much of her/his life to Catholic healthcare. This award is conferred each year upon an acknowledged leader of a health ministry who has inspired and mentored numerous others. This individual’s leadership should extend past the Catholic health ministry to influence and impact the local community and beyond.
Sister Maura’s impact on the Michiana community is immeasurable. At an age when most consider retirement, Sister Maura pursued her vision to staff a small clinic with nurses to provide health education and screenings to those living in the near west side of South Bend. The Health Center’s humble beginnings in 1986 were in a 400-square-foot, two-bay garage on Washington Street.
Today this vision is a 10,000-square-foot comprehensive primary care clinic at the corner of Chapin and Western in South Bend. The Health Center focuses on providing care for the unemployed or working poor. Services include routine check-ups and exams, treatment for illnesses and injuries, chronic disease management, screenings and immunizations, medication assistance, a dental clinic and more. Medical care is provided through the generosity of volunteer physicians and nurses in our community, and laboratory services are donated by the South Bend Medical Foundation.
Thanks to the vision and drive of Sister Maura, the Health Center has become a place of compassionate care and a healing sanctuary for individuals who simply have nowhere else to turn.
“For six-plus extraordinary decades, Sister Maura has served the Sisters of the Holy Cross and touched the lives of countless individuals within our community,” said Al Gutierrez, SJRMC President and CEO. “Just as she is a Godsend to so many people on South Bend's West Side, she is a Godsend to all of us here at Saint Joseph. She continues to keep us humbled and inspired, and we are so pleased to celebrate her many accomplishments as she accepts this Lifetime Achievement Award.”
