Osteoporosis, the softening of the bones, can cause bones to become weak and break more easily.
The disease can occur as a result of natural aging, post-menopausal estrogen deficiency, secondary conditions that adversely impact bone metabolism and can sometimes even be traced to childhood.
A bone density test, or Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorption (DEXA) exam, can diagnose osteoporosis, estimate the density of bones and the risk of breaking a bone. A bone density exam is fast, inexpensive and requires no prior preparation. Clothing does not need to be removed.
The Saint Joseph Center for Women's Health generally recommends a bone density test for women over 65 as well as younger postmenopausal women with risk factors for osteoporosis. Ask your physician if you should get a scan.
Bone density scans are offered at the following locations:
Center for Women's Health, Mishawaka Saint Joseph Medical Imaging Center, South Bend SJRMC - Plymouth Campus
To schedule a scan at any of our locations, call our Appointment Center at 574-247-5400.
