da Vinci® Surgical System

This robot‑assisted, minimally-invasive surgery uses sophisticated computer‑guided instruments to help surgeons perform complex procedures with exceptional precision. The technology is designed to enhance the surgeon’s capabilities while prioritizing patient safety, comfort, and recovery.

How the technology works

During robot‑assisted surgery, the surgeon operates from a console that provides a highly magnified, high‑definition, three‑dimensional view of the surgical area. Using hand and finger controls, the surgeon guides miniaturized instruments that move with natural, wrist‑like flexibility. The system translates the surgeon’s movements into precise actions inside the body, allowing for careful dissection and reconstruction in areas that are difficult to reach.

Importantly, the technology does not perform surgery on its own. Every movement is directed and controlled by the surgeon at all times.

What this means for patients

Compared with traditional open surgery, robot‑assisted, minimally-invasive procedures may offer several potential benefits, depending on the type of surgery and the patient’s condition:

  • Faster return to everyday activities
  • Less pain after surgery
  • Lower risk of infection and certain complications
  • Reduced blood loss
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Smaller incisions

These advantages are the result of improved visualization and more precise instrument control, which can help limit disruption to surrounding muscles, nerves and tissues.

Procedures that may use robot‑assisted surgery

Robot‑assisted techniques are used across a wide range of specialties, including:

  • General surgery
  • Gynecologic surgery
  • Select pediatric and transoral surgeries
  • Thoracic and cardiac procedures
  • Urologic surgery

In some cases, surgeons can perform procedures through a single hidden incision, such as within the natural contours of the belly button, further minimizing visible scarring.

A tool that supports surgical expertise

This technology is one of several tools surgeons may use to deliver minimally invasive care. At Saint Joseph Health System, surgeons use a robot‑assisted platform such as the da Vinci® Surgical System when it is clinically appropriate and aligned with a patient’s needs.

Every surgery carries risk, and results can vary from person to person. Robotassisted surgery may not be the best option for every patient or every condition. A consultation with your physician is the best way to understand your treatment options and determine whether a minimally invasive, robotassisted approach is right for you.
