Enterostomal Therapy

Enterostomal Therapy Services at SJRMC provides ostomy care and teaching to those undergoing ostomy surgery, or those with existing ostomies.

The word ostomy signifies a type of surgery required when a person has lost the normal function of the bladder or bowel due to birth defects, disease, injury or other disorders. Such operations include colostomy, ileostomy, urostomy and special procedures.

The surgery allows for normal body wastes to be expelled through a new surgical opening on the abdominal wall. An opening called a "stoma" is made and the patient must usually wear an appliance to collect waste that flows out from the stoma. An ostomy may be temporary or permanent.

Though the care of ostomy has changed and continues to with new products and techniques, healthcare providers are continually challenged to meet the needs of families living with an ostomy.

Enterostomal Therapy Services include:

  • Ostomy education & support
  • Management of ostomy complications
  • Fitting of ostomy equipment
  • Assistance with discharge planning
  • Wound and incontinence services
