Detection & Treatment of Heart Disease

Heart disease is the number one killer of both women and men in the U.S. Risk factors for heart disease include:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Family history of heart attack or stroke
  • Inactive lifestyle

SJRMC offers ways to assess your risk of heart disease or stroke, including a stress test, an EKG, a simple blood test called an hs-CRP or the latest method, the Coronary CTA.

Coronary CTA

SJRMC is proud to be a technology leader by providing the most advanced CT scan available. Coronary CTA is indicated for patients under the following circumstances:

  • Chest pain syndrome
  • Management of patients with inconclusive stress tests.
  • Evaluation of recurrent symptoms or exacerbation of coronary artery disease in patients with known disease.
  • Patients experiencing chest pain or difficulty breathing with prior bypass surgery or coronary artery stent placement.

Thanks to the LightSpeed 64-Slice VCT Scanner, organ structures are now captured in a one-second scan. In five seconds - the heart and coronary arteries with incredible detail. In ten seconds - an entire body vascular scan.

With this technology, a complete coronary angiogram can be acquired non-invasively within five heartbeats. Coronary CTA also evaluates non-coronary causes of chest pain, such as aortic dissection and pulmonary embolism.

The most advanced CT scan available provides:

  • Higher quality images
  • Better diagnostic capability
  • Lower radiation doses
  • Shorter breath-holds during the test

Cardiac Catheterization Lab

Cardiac catheterization helps doctors detect artery blockage and evaluate the size and function of the heart's valves and chambers.

Any abnormalities can be precisely visualized. Other procedures performed by the lab include balloon angioplasty and valvuloplasty, where balloons are inserted in constricted blood vessels or heart valves to widen them, and cardiac electrophysiology.

Once identified, our cardiac electrophysiologists work closely with a patient's doctor to determine an appropriate course of treatment. Treatment may involve drugs, surgery or the implantation of a pacemaker or implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD).

Our cardiovascular surgeons perform a wide variety of procedures, including open-heart surgery and heart-lung bypass surgery.
