February 20, 2007 – Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) and The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) announced today a strategic partnership that will expand access to world-class physical medicine and rehabilitation services to Michiana and the surrounding communities.

The partnership marks two important milestones for the two health systems. SJRMC will be the only healthcare system in North Central Indiana offering RIC’s full spectrum of physical medicine and rehabilitation within both acute and post-acute care, including medical-surgical rehabilitation, inpatient rehabilitation, long-term acute care, and outpatient rehabilitation. In addition, this is the first extension of RIC’s world-class services outside of the state of Illinois, as part of its long-term growth strategy.

SJRMC, a member of Trinity Health, serves more than one million people in the Michiana market, including North Central Indiana and Southwest Michigan that touches eight counties and geographically touching both states.

"Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center is proud to work with the world-renowned Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago to provide comprehensive rehabilitation care to the Michiana communities," said Nancy R. Hellyer, SJRMC’s President and CEO. "This partnership is a tremendous honor that speaks volumes about our ability to provide first-rate quality care to North Central Indiana. RIC truly understands Saint Joseph’s commitment to bring world-class healthcare services home to the people of Michiana."

The Michiana market has an expected five-year population growth of more than 12 percent for adults 65 years and older, the market segment currently the largest users of rehabilitation services.

A leader in healthcare throughout North Central Indiana, SJRMC features three acute care hospitals, one long-term acute facility, and one free-standing outpatient surgery center. It also is the region’s largest network of primary care physicians. SJRMC is currently building a new 254-inpatient bed hospital on its 90-acre site in Edison Lakes, Mishawaka. The new hospital will open in 2009.

RIC, the recognized leader in rehabilitation patient care, research, education and advocacy for people with disabilities, has been ranked the "Best Rehabilitation Hospital in America" by U.S. News & World Report for 16 consecutive years, will deliver services throughout the three SJRMC campuses including Our Lady of Peace Hospital, a 26-bed inpatient rehabilitation facility and long-term acute care hospital located at SJRMC/South Bend.

"This partnership is a significant step forward for RIC’s long-term growth strategy to bring leading edge rehabilitation care to communities outside of Illinois, to make a real difference in the world for people with disabilities," said Joanne C. Smith, M.D., president and CEO of RIC. "Like RIC, Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center is the best of its kind. Together, we will advance the standard of rehabilitation care for these communities."
