Cardiovascular Institute
The Saint Joseph Cardiovascular Institute is an innovative approach to bringing physicians together to achieve higher quality of care. Our institute unites cardiologists, radiologists, cardiac surgeons and vascular surgeons around the patient’s needs.
When faced with heart and vascular disease, it is comforting to know the Saint Joseph team of expert physicians is ready to help. The physicians at the Saint Joseph Cardiovascular Institute work closely together, providing clear direction on the best approaches for quality and safety. Our program is the only one in the area giving physicians a direct voice in day-to-day management and standards.
Coordination of Care
Effective heart and vascular care depends on teamwork. In the case of a heart attack, the Saint Joseph team is working together from the moment the ambulance is on its way to the day the patient completes their recovery. All three Saint Joseph emergency departments are designed to quickly and effectively treat heart disease. Our commitment is to provide exceptional care when minutes matter. The Saint Joseph Cardiovascular Institute has a full range of technology and services.
Our cardiac catheterization labs
Our cardiac catheterization labs conduct a full range of diagnostic and interventional procedures. Cardiac catheterization helps doctors detect artery blockage and evaluate the size and function of the heart’s valves and chambers. Any abnormalities can be precisely visualized. Other procedures performed by the lab include balloon angioplasty and valvuloplasty, where balloons are inserted in constricted blood vessels or heart valves to widen them, and cardiac electrophysiology.
Treatment designed to get you well...and get you home
The prime objective of clinical cardiac electrophysiology is to identify a wide range of cardiac arrhythmias or conduction disturbances, any of which may be at the root of such symptoms as fatigue, palpitations, dizziness, fainting or cardiac arrest. Testing can also reveal a person’s susceptibility to arrhythmias. Once identified, our cardiac electro-physiologists work closely with a patient’s doctor to determine an appropriate course of treatment. Treatment may involve drugs, surgery and/or the implantation of a pacemaker.
When surgery is necessary, you won’t find more capable hands than those of the cardiovascular surgeons at Saint Joseph Cardiovascular Institute. They perform a wide variety of procedures, including open-heart surgery and heart-lung bypass surgery. They’re also highly skilled in performing our new Port Access minimally invasive surgery. This technique eliminates much of the pain and trauma, not to mention the recovery time, associated with conventional heart surgery.
Are there any warning symptoms of a heart attack?
Many people at the onset of a heart attack feel only a vague discomfort. They may think they’ve got nothing more than indigestion. However, if you or someone you love experiences any of the following symptoms, please seek medical help immediately:
