Midwifery of Michiana (MOM)—we listen to women
Midwifery of Michiana prides itself on its ability to listen to women.“ Decisions range from natural childbirth, to water birth, to the need for an epidural. CNMs at Midwifery of Michiana (or MOM) are affiliated with Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center and are registered nurses who have completed a formal course of study in midwifery from an accredited program and are licensed by the Board of Nursing. The nurse-midwives attend births at the Genesis Birth Center in Mishawaka.
MOM offers an option for women seeking gynecological, and obstetrical care in a comfortable, friendly environment. More and more women are turning to nurse-midwives because they want to be treated as a partner in their own healthcare. Many pregnant women also prefer a healthcare provider who is willing to involve the entire family in the pregnancy and in preparing for the new baby. Family-centered care is a hallmark service. Contrary to what many women may think, nurse-midwives provide much more than just prenatal care and delivery. Studies have shown nurse-midwives provide safe, satisfying care and decrease the incidence of low birth weight, infant mortality and cesarean birth.
Originally called the Genesis Nurse-Midwifery Service, the group has been associated with the Mishawaka hospital since May 1991. Since moving into their new offices at the 4-West Medical Pavilion at 420 W. Fourth St., Suite 100, in Mishawaka last April, they have increased their patient base and have recently expanded into Elkhart at a site located at 229 W. Marion.
Spanish-speaking interpreters are also available in the MOM office. For more information on MOM, call (574) 252-0300. The nurse-midwives work in collaboration with a group of obstetrics/gynecology physicians. The nurse-midwives work in collaboration with a group of OB/GYN physicians. If complications arise the physician is readily available.
