The Family Birthplace at South Bend

Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center has a long tradition of dignity and respect for expectant mothers, their families and for the miracle of life they experience. Whether you have a routine delivery or encounter the unexpected, you and your family will get the kind of expert care you expect from highly specialized R.N.’s at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center.

We’ve taken this care to an even higher level with our Family Birthplace. Here you’ll find a warm and cheerful environment, complete with all the amenities you need to make your childbirth experience as comfortable as possible. The Family Birthplace features seven home-like labor, delivery and recovery rooms. A state-of-the-art infant security system is used for all infants.

In our mother/baby unit, mom and newborn are together privately, just like home. The same nurses care for both mother and baby, which means better communication and coordination of care. There’s plenty of room for husbands or birth partners to spend the night and for siblings and grandparents to visit.

The caring continues

Even after you and your baby leave Saint Joseph Family Birthplace, we’re still here to help. Lactation consultants are available to assist new mothers from birth throughout the breastfeeding period. A Family Birthplace nurse will even visit you at home to help make your adjustment to parenthood easier.

Tours of the Family Birthplace are available on the first Saturday of each month at noon. The tour will meet in the lobby on the first floor. No reservations are required.

Lactation Center

Our Lactation Center offers:

  • A monthly prenatal breastfeeding class.
  • Postpartum lactation consultations for moms and babies learning to breastfeed.
  • Outpatient lactation consultations for weight checks, problem solving and pump sales and rentals.
  • Weekly support group for breastfeeding moms.
  • Lactation “help line” at (574) 237-7043.
