Inpatient nutrition oncology

An initial nutritional screening is completed by the nursing staff of radiation oncology. Based on criteria, a nutritional consult is sent to the registered dietitian whereupon a comprehensive nutrition evaluation is performed with the patient. A consultation can be requested by the patient/family at any time during the patient’s treatment.

  • Education is provided regarding symptom management related to radiation treatment.
  • Education is provided regarding post-treatment meal planning.
  • Education if provided regarding supplemental and/or tube feeding management to those meeting that criteria.

All inpatient oncology patients are screened initially by nursing regarding their nutritional status. When appropriate, a referral is sent to the registered dietitian for a comprehensive nutrition evaluation. A consultation can be requested by the patient/family at any time for a dietitian visit during the patient’s hospital stay.

  • Tolerance to tube feedings and other forms of nutritional support are monitored and adjusted accordingly.
  • Education, evaluation and follow-up regarding symptom management related to chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments is provided.
  • Education regarding discharge diet is provided to patient/family.
  • Complete analysis regarding pt’s diet, intake, weight, treatment regimen and other related needs is continuously monitored.
