Preparing for your surgery
Your surgery will be scheduled by your surgeon. At that time, the surgeon will discuss with you the expected type of stay, outpatient or inpatient. The type of stay is determined by the type of surgery you are having and the follow-up care required after the surgery.
Outpatient or “day surgery” is the most common surgical experience. You will arrive at the hospital or outpatient facility at the appointed time, have the surgery, and be closely monitored and cared for while your anesthesia/sedation wears off and you are ready to be discharged to your home.
Inpatient or “same-day admission” surgery is on patients who are already in the hospital (inpatient) or who will stay in the hospital following the surgery (same-day admission).
Presurgical testing
Based on your health history and surgical procedure, your surgeon may order tests to be completed prior to your surgery. Be sure to have these completed as instructed by your surgeon as further testing may be needed. The results of these tests will aid in determining the appropriate anesthesia for you.
