IUSB nursing student Chloe Rucker joined SJHS staff on an informational tour of the various departments in the Mishawaka Medical Center. Chloe is the most recent recipient of the Saint Joseph Health System Shields Scholarship to Indiana University South Bend.
The SJHS Shields Scholarship is awarded twice per year to qualified nursing students entering their final year of nursing school.  Students receive not only a monetary award, but also a nursing position at Saint Joseph Health System upon graduation.  During the recent tour, Chloe was able to tour eight different nursing departments with an overview of each department provided by SJHS nursing leaders.  In addition, she is invited to schedule follow-up visits through her contact at the Foundation to learn more about departments that she may be interested in for her career after graduation.

Gatherings of all Shields recipients will be regularly scheduled to ensure that as nursing colleagues at Saint Joe, each recipient will start to form a network of friends and colleagues within the health system.

The Shields Fund for the Education of Medical Professionals was established at the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County in 1994 by William S. and Kathryn L. Shields to provide financial assistances to individuals seeking to enhance their training and education within the healthcare field.  The Foundation of Saint Joseph Health System has awarded over 140 scholarships to nursing students since its inception.
