Grateful Patients Pay It Forward
October 16, 2025
In fundraising, we refer to them as “grateful patients,” but Eldon Miller said it best when he explained he simply tries to make his late wife proud by doing good.
Eldon’s wife Michelle passed away in March 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. Michelle’s obituary relayed, “The Miller family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated team of doctors, nurses, and staff on the sixth-floor oncology unit at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. Your compassionate care and unwavering support during Michelle's time under your care were deeply appreciated. Thank you for your commitment to excellence and for providing comfort and compassion during a challenging time. Your kindness will always be remembered fondly by the Miller family.”
Jon Sherwood was with his mother Sandra Weaver, who was hospitalized in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), when quality care inspired him to recognize the PACU nurses.
Jon and Sandra had experienced a difficult spring with the passing of Sandra’s husband, Warren. When Sandra found herself hospitalized soon after, Jon was inspired by the care of the Saint Joseph Health System nurses in the PACU. He immediately found his way to the administration offices to provide a gift in honor of the PACU team. A drummer in local bands, Jon shared that he hoped to continue to support the Foundation of SJHS through fundraisers when he was able to resume playing gigs, which he has stepped away from to assist his mother.
“I met with Eldon Miller and Jon Sherwood just weeks apart this spring,” said Steve Funk, director of philanthropy at the Foundation of SJHS. “Both Eldon and Jon freely shared how during difficult times our nurses had a tremendous impact on their families. To me, that is what faith-based care means. I want to thank both gentlemen for the impact they provided by paying it forward through their donations.”
To the nurses in 6th Floor Oncology and PACU, thank you for leading by example in the quality, faith-based care you provide the patients of SJHS. You are an inspiration to all!
