Robotic-Assisted Bronchoscopy: Advancing Lung Cancer Detection and Care in Michiana
April 23, 2025Saint Joseph Health System is proud to offer robotic-assisted bronchoscopy, a state-of-the-art, minimally-invasive procedure used to diagnose lung conditions, including lung cancer, with unprecedented precision.
Thanks to generous support from philanthropic donors, the Foundation funded the purchase of this advanced technology, bringing world-class lung diagnostics closer to home for patients in our region. Saint Joseph Mishawaka Medical Center is currently the only hospital in the area offering this level of innovation in pulmonary care.
Why this technology matters:
- Earlier detection of lung cancer: Robotic-assisted bronchoscopy allows physicians to reach small and hard-to-access areas of the lung, increasing the chances of identifying cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage.
- Minimally invasive: This procedure requires no incisions, which helps reduce recovery time and patient discomfort.
- Greater precision: With enhanced visualization and control, physicians can navigate complex airways to obtain highly accurate biopsies.
- Improved access and convenience: Patients who previously had to travel to Chicago can now receive the same high-quality care locally.
“Our team is already using this technology to improve outcomes for patients in the Michiana community,” says Dr. Donald Westerhausen, pulmonary disease specialist. “We can now diagnose lung cancer earlier and plan treatments more effectively—right here at home.”
This investment is a powerful example of how donor contributions to the Foundation are helping bring cutting-edge medical advancements to our community by improving and saving lives.
