Family Medicine Residency
Training Tomorrow's Medical Professionals
The Family Medicine Residency Program at SJHS is designed to train medical professionals to provide comprehensive medical care on a continuing basis for individuals and families. The Family Medicine Residency Program is one of the nation's first family medicine residency programs. The program has maintained full accreditation from the American Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) since it began in 1971. We are a community-based, 9-9-9 family medicine program with close ties to local colleges and universities through our Sports Medicine Fellowship. The friendliness of the state of Indiana to family practitioners gives residents exposure to Family Medicine-trained physicians, practicing full-spectrum whole-person care and family-oriented, including obstetrics. Access to rural hospitals within the Saint Joseph Health System, as well as a wide variety of unique electives done by preceding residents, paves the way for each resident to tailor his or her training to excel wherever they land after graduation. Recent graduates have pursued a variety of fellowship opportunities, such as obstetrics, sports medicine, geriatrics, and palliative care, while others have set up practice in a variety of settings, from rural towns to inner cities, and private practice to direct primary care to academia. Our host institution’s administration is unanimously supportive of the residency.
The Family Medicine Residency Program seeks:
- To provide quality training in the discipline of Family Medicine
- To impart the knowledge and skills necessary to allow a family physician to demonstrate competency in both clinical and procedural skills
- To train in family-centered care that addresses the longitudinal health care needs of the residents' patients, focusing on comprehensive preventive health care
- To provide residents an environment that fosters commitment to serving the community and providing care to the medically underserved
- To foster a high level of professional behavior and to help residents balance their personal and professional lives in a way that ensures wellness and continued growth throughout their careers.
- To provide a forum of scholarship through which motivated physicians can actively pursue medical knowledge.
- To develop in resident physicians the desire and skill to maintain high-quality medical skills and clinical practices.
Each resident spends time in the Family Medicine Center: a minimum of one (1) half-day per week the first year, two (2) half-days per week the second year, and three (3) half-days per week the third year. Residents have their own assigned families for whom they are responsible. On average over the past two years, our graduates have seen over 1,800 patient visits during their three years of residency. They will see entire family unites, from newborns to grandparents. The clinic also provides obstetrics care for women of the community. Residents deliver an average of over 300 babies annually in The Family Birthplace.
